「過去世において、かつて存在した阿羅漢（arahant）にして正等覚（sammāsambodhi）を開かれた諸仏は、集まり会して、轟くような喧騒と大きな物音のなかに座し、汝らの師匠方の流儀にあるごとく、さまざまな低俗な話題（tiracchānakathā）に耽って住されたであろうか。それとも、かの世尊（bhagavant）方は、静かにして物音なく、人里離れ、人の密やかなる語らいにふさわしく、独処（paṭisallāna）に適した、森林や林野の辺遠なる臥坐処（senāsana）に親しまれた——まさに今の私がそうであるように。」
