「もしそうであるならば、罪悪を厭う（jigucchā）熱烈な苦行（tapas）は、清浄となるのでしょうか、それとも清浄とならないのでしょうか」
「まことに、尊者よ、そうであれば、その苦行は清浄となります。最高の境地（agga）に達し、真髄（sāra）に到達したと言えましょう」
「ニグローダよ、そうではない。その段階においては、罪悪を厭う熱烈な苦行は、いまだ最高の境地にも真髄にも達してはいないのである」
２・４ 辺材に達することについて
「では、尊者よ、いかなる段階において、罪悪を厭う熱烈な苦行は最高の境地に達し、真髄に到達すると言えるのでしょうか」
――悲（karuṇā）を伴う心をもって……喜（muditā）を伴う心をもって……捨（upekkhā）を伴う心をもって、広大にして高遠なる、無量にして怨なく害なき心を、あらゆる方角に満たして……かつて経験した種々の前世の境涯を、すなわち一生、二生、三生を……と想い起こす。
