嫉妬せず、物惜しみをせず……狡猾でなく、欺かず……頑なでなく、慢心を抱かず……邪欲なく、邪なる欲望の支配に陥らず……
２・３ 純粋なる樹皮（精髄）に達することについて
「されば、尊者よ、いかなる境地に至れば、罪悪を厭う苦行（タパ）は、その極みに達し、また精髄（サーラ）に達したと言えるのでありましょうか」
「ニグローダよ、苦行者が四誓戒（チャートゥヤーマ・サンヴァラ）によってよく制御されているならば、それこそがその者の苦行であると知るべし。彼は前に進み、低きに退くことがない。彼は人里離れた住処を求める——すなわち、荒野、樹木の根元、丘、峡谷、山窟、墓地、林中、露天の空き地、藁束の積まれた場所などである。彼は食後、托鉢（ピンダパータ）より帰りて……
