If he performs two, I’ll perform four. If he performs four, I’ll perform eight. 「もし沙門ゴータマが二つの神通の奇跡（iddhi-pāṭihāriya）を行ずるならば、われは四つを行じよう。四つを行ずるならば、われは八つを行じよう。沙門ゴータマが超人的境地（uttari-manussa-dhamma）の神通の奇跡をいかほど行じようとも、われはその倍を行じてみせよう」と。
「聞けば、名うてのリッチャヴィ族の人々、富裕なバラモンの長者たち、裕福な在家の人々、そしてさまざまな外道（nānā-titthiya）の沙門・バラモンたちが、こぞって集い来たとのこと。さあ、パーティカプッタ尊者よ、どうか中途まで歩み出られよ。沙門ゴータマはすでに前半の道を進まれ、いまやあなたの園林（ārāma）にお座りになっておられる」と。
