1.6. The Charnel Ground Contemplations Furthermore, suppose a mendicant were to see a corpse discarded in a charnel ground. And it had been dead for one, two, or three days, bloated, livid, and festering. They’d compare it with their own body: ‘This body is also of that same nature, that same kind, and cannot go beyond that.’ And so they meditate observing an aspect of the body internally … That too is how a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body. さらにまた、比丘たちよ、比丘が墓場に打ち捨てられた死骸を見るとする。その死骸は死後一日、あるいは二日、あるいは三日を経て、膨れあがり、青黒く変色し、膿汁（のうじゅう）が滲み出ているとする。比丘はそこで、おのが身をそれに引き比べ、こう観察する。
「この我が身もまた、かかる性質（ダンマ）を持ち、かかる状態（バーヴィー）となるべきものであり、そのことを免れることはできぬ」と。
かくのごとく、内に向かって身において身を観察し（カーヤーヌパッサー）て住する……
このようにして、比丘たちよ、比丘は身において身を観察しながら住するのである。
さらにまた、比丘たちよ、比丘が墓場に打ち捨てられた死骸を見るとする。それが烏（からす）に啄（ついば）まれ、鷹（たか）に啄まれ、鷲（わし）に……
