Then King Mahāsudassana left the Chamber of the Grand Tower and entered the golden chamber, where he sat on the golden couch. He meditated spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. やがてマハースダッサナ王は、大楼閣殿（マハーヴィユーハ・クータガーラ）を出て黄金の楼閣殿（ソヴァンナマヤ・クータガーラ）に入り、銀の臥床（パッランカ）に坐した。そして慈（メッター）の心と倶なる思いをもって、一方に向かって遍満し、住した。同じように第二の方角へ、同じように第三の方角へ、同じように第四の方角へと遍満した。かくして上方へ、下方へ、横へと、あらゆる方所において、自他の別なく、この全世界に対して、慈の心と倶なる思いを――広大にして、崇高にして、無量にして、怨みなく、瞋恚（しんに）なき心をもって――遍満し、住した。
次いで悲（カルナー）の心と倶なる思いをもって一方に向かって遍満し、住した。同じように……。次いで喜（ムディター）の心と倶なる思いをもって一方に向かって遍満し、住した。同じように……。次いで捨（ウペッカー）の心と倶なる思いをもって一方に向かって遍満し、住した。同じように……。
