Arouse desire for these! Take an interest in life!’ And she likewise urged the king to live on by taking an interest in all his possessions as described above. 「これらのものに対して、欲求を起こしなさい。命に執着を持ちなさい」
こうして王妃は、先に述べたすべての宝物を引き合いに出しながら、王に生きることへの関心を持つよう繰り返し勧めた。
王妃がかように申し上げると、マハースダッサナ王は、スバッダー王妃にこう言われた。
「王妃よ、そなたはながい歳月にわたって、わたくしに対し、望ましく、愛しく、親しく、心地よい言葉をもって接してくれた。しかるに、わたくしの最期の時にあたって、そなたはいま、望ましくなく、愛しくなく、親しくなく、心地よくもない言葉をもってわたくしに接しているではないか」
「では大王よ、いかように申し上げればよろしいのでございましょうか」
「王妃よ、このようにわたくしに語りかけるがよい。
『大王よ、愛しく（piya）、心に適う（manāpa）ものとの別れ、離れ、異なるものとなること——
