At each gate there were seven pillars, three fathoms deep and four fathoms high, made of gold, silver, beryl, crystal, ruby, emerald, and all precious things. 各門ごとに七本の門柱（esikā）が打ち立てられており、地中に三尋（ポリサ）深く埋められ、地上に四尋の高さにそびえていた。一本は金よりなり、一本は銀よりなり、一本は瑠璃（veḷuriya）よりなり、一本は水晶よりなり、一本は赤玉よりなり、一本は碧玉（masāragalla）よりなり、一本はあらゆる宝よりなっていた。
アーナンダよ、クサーヴァティー（Kusāvatī）王城は七列の多羅樹（tālapantī）の並木に取り囲まれていた。アーナンダよ、それらの多羅樹の並木が風にそよぐとき、その響きは優雅にして心を魅了し、感覚を和ませ、人の心を酔わせるものであった。それはちょうど、よく鍛錬を積み、調和のとれた演奏を身につけた巧みな音楽家たちによる五種の楽器（pañcaṅgika-tūriya）の合奏のようであった。そしてかの時、クサーヴァティーにおいて快楽に耽り、酒宴に興じ、放逸の生活を送る者たちは……
