The Buddha’s funeral pyre shall not burn until he bows with his head at the Buddha’s feet.” “Sir, let it be as the deities plan.” “We shall light the Buddha’s funeral pyre.” But they were unable to do so. 「マハーカッサパ尊者が世尊の御足に頭を以て礼拝申し上げるまでは、世尊の荼毘（だび）の薪は燃え上がることがないでしょう。」
「尊者よ、天神（デーヴァター）たちのご意向のままになされますよう。」
「われらが世尊の荼毘の薪に火を点じましょう。」
しかしながら、彼らは火を点ずることができなかった。
そこでコーサーラーのマッラ族の人々はアヌルッダ尊者のもとに参り、こう申し上げた。
「アヌルッダ尊者よ、いかなる因（ヘートゥ）により、いかなる縁（パッチャヤ）により、頭を洗い清め、新しき衣をまとったこれら四人のマッラ族の長老たちが、世尊の荼毘の薪に火を点ずることができないのでしょうか。」
「ヴァーセッタたちよ、天神（デーヴァター）たちのご意向は別のところにあるのです。」
「では尊者よ、天神たちのご意向とはいかなるものでございましょうか。」
「天神たちのご意向はこうです。マハーカッサパ（大迦葉）尊者が——」
