Mahākassapa saw him coming off in the distance and said to him, “Reverend, might you know about our Teacher?” “Yes, reverend. Seven days ago the ascetic Gotama was fully quenched. 長老マハーカッサパは、遠くからその阿字命（ājīvaka、裸形外道）が近づいてくるのを見て、こう問いかけた。「友よ、われらの師のことをご存知か」と。
「さよう、友よ、存じております。七日前に、沙門ゴータマは般涅槃（parinibbāna）されました。そこよりこの曼陀羅華（mandāravapuppha）を手に取って参ったのでございます」と。
そこに居合わせた比丘たちのうち、いまだ離貪（vītarāga）を得ていなかった者たちは、ある者は両腕を高く差し上げて泣き崩れ、あたかも足を断たれたるがごとく地に倒れ伏し、身をのたうちながら嘆き叫んだ。
「いかに早く、世尊（Bhagavā）は般涅槃されてしまわれたことか。いかに早く、善逝（Sugata）は般涅槃されてしまわれたことか。いかに早く、世の眼は滅し去ってしまわれたことか」と。
