「ヴァーセッタたちよ、あなたがたのお考えと、天神（デーヴァター）がたのお考えとは、異なるものです。」「しかし、尊師よ、天神がたのお考えとはいかなるものでございましょうか。」「ヴァーセッタたちよ、あなたがたのお考えはこうです——『われらは世尊のご遺体を、舞と歌と音楽と華鬘（けまん）と香とをもって恭しく尊び、礼拝し、供養しながら、町の南側を通って運び、町の外、南の方においてご遺体を荼毘（だび）に付し奉らん』と。ところが、ヴァーセッタたちよ、天神がたのお考えはこうです——『われらは世尊のご遺体を、天上の舞と歌と音楽と華鬘と香とをもって恭しく尊び、礼拝し、供養しながら、町の北の門より城内へと入り……』と。
