「愛しく慕わしいものすべてと、別れ離れねばならぬとは——いかにしてそのようなことがあろうか。生じたるもの、存在するもの、条件によって形成されたもの（有為）、壊滅の法（破滅の性質）を持つものが、壊れないということが、どうしてありえようか。そのような道理は存在しない。諸天（神々）は嘆いております」と。
「されば、尊者よ、アヌルッダ長老は、いかなる諸天を心に思われているのですか」
「友よ、アーナンダよ、虚空に住する諸天と、地に住する諸天のうち、地想（地に根ざした意識）を持つものたちがおります。彼らは髪を振り乱し、両腕を高く差し伸べて泣き叫び、足元から倒れ伏すように崩れ落ち、身を転じ身をもだえながら、こう嘆いております——『世尊（バガヴァ）の般涅槃（パリニッバーナ）はあまりに早い、善逝（スガタ）の般涅槃はあまりに早い』と」
