“Now, Ānanda, some of you might think: ‘The teacher’s dispensation has passed. Now we have no Teacher.’ But you should not see it like this. The teaching and training that I have taught and pointed out for you shall be your Teacher after my passing. 「アーナンダよ、あるいは汝らの中に、『師の教えはすでに過ぎ去り、われらにはもはや師がおられない』と思う者があるかもしれない。しかしアーナンダよ、そのように見てはならない。わたしが汝らのために説き示した法（ダンマ）と律（ヴィナヤ）、それこそが、わたしの入滅の後、汝らの師となるであろう。」
世尊が般涅槃（パリニッバーナ）に入られると、その般涅槃とともに、大地は激しく揺れ動き、人の心を震わせ、身の毛もよだつほどであった。そして天の太鼓（デーヴァドゥンドゥビ）は轟き鳴り響いた。
「ああ、諸行（サンカーラ）はまことに無常なり。
生じては滅する性（さが）を持つものよ。
生じたるものはやがて滅す。
それらの静まりこそ、まことの安楽（スカ）なり。」
世尊が般涅槃に入られると、その般涅槃とともに、尊者アヌルッダは、この偈（ガーター）を唱えられた。
