「スバッダよ、いかなる教えと律（ヴィナヤ）においても、聖なる八正道（アリヤ・アッタンギカ・マッガ）が見出されないならば、そこには第一の沙門（サマナ）も見出されず、第二の沙門も見出されず、第三の沙門も見出されず、第四の沙門もまた見出されない。ここ〔この教えと律〕の外には、第一の沙門もなく、第二の沙門もなく、第三の沙門もなく、第四の沙門もない。他の諸々の異説（パラッパヴァーダ）は、沙門たちを欠きて空虚である。されどスバッダよ、これらの比丘たちが正しく行じるならば、世界は阿羅漢（アラハント）たちを欠くことなからん。」
