Once upon a time there was a king named Mahāsudassana who was a wheel-turning monarch, a just and principled king. His dominion extended to all four sides, he achieved stability in the country, and he possessed the seven treasures. His capital was this Kusinārā, which at the time was named Kusāvatī. 昔、マハースダッサナ（大善見）と名乗る王がいた。かの王は転輪聖王（チャッカヴァッティ）にして、法（ダンマ）によって治める法王であり、四方に覇を唱え、国土に安寧をもたらし、七宝（サッタラタナ）を具え給うた。
アーナンダよ、マハースダッサナ王の王都は、この拘尸那羅（クシナーラー）、当時クサーヴァティーと呼ばれしその地にほかならなかった。東西には十二由旬（ヨージャナ）の長さをもち、南北には七由旬の広がりをもっていた。
アーナンダよ、クサーヴァティーの王都は、栄え、富み、人口多く、人々で賑わい、食物に事欠かぬ豊かな都であった。ちょうどアーナンダよ、神々の王都アーラカマンダーが栄え……
