“Mendicants, where is Ānanda?” “Sir, Ānanda has entered a dwelling, and stands there leaning against the door-jamb and crying: ‘Oh! I’m still only a trainee with work left to do; and my Teacher is about to be fully extinguished, he who is so kind to me!’” So the Buddha addressed one of the monks, “Please, monk, in my name tell Ānanda that the teacher summons him.” “Yes, reverend,” Ānanda replied. 「比丘たちよ、阿難（アーナンダ）はどこにいるか」
「世尊よ、阿難長老は精舎（ヴィハーラ）に入り、扉の柱に身をもたせかけて泣いております。『ああ、わたしはいまだ有学（セーカ）の身、なすべき修行の残る者。それなのに、わたしをかくも慈しんでくださった師は、今まさに般涅槃（パリニッバーナ）に入られようとしている』と」
そこで世尊はある一人の比丘に告げられた。
「比丘よ、来たれ。わたしの言葉を阿難に伝えよ。『師が汝、阿難を召されている』と」
「かしこまりました、友よ」
と阿難長老はその比丘の言葉を受け、世尊のもとへと近づいた。近づいて世尊を礼拝し、かたわらに座した。
世尊は仰せられた。
