The Buddha sat on the seat spread out. When he was seated he said to Venerable Ānanda, “Go on then, Ānanda, fetch me some water. I am thirsty and will drink.” When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha, “Sir, just now around five hundred carts have passed by. 世尊は設けられた座にお着きになった。座につかれると、世尊はアーナンダ尊者にこうお告げになった。
「さあ、アーナンダよ、水を持ってきなさい。わたしは渇いている。水を飲もう。」
このように仰せになると、アーナンダ尊者は世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「尊師よ、ちょうど今しがた、およそ五百台の荷車が通り過ぎたばかりでございます。その浅い流れは車輪によってかき乱され、濁って澱んだ水が流れております。尊師よ、カクダー（Kakudhā）河はほど遠からぬところにございます。その水は清く、甘く、冷たく、澄み渡り、岸辺はなだらかで、まことに心地よい河でございます。そこにて世尊は水をお飲みになり、また御身をお冷やしになることもできましょう。」
