「如来（にょらい）は四神足（しじんそく）を修め、よく修習し、乗り物となし、基盤となし、実践し、積み重ね、よく励んでいる。アーナンダよ、如来はもし望むならば、一劫（いっこう）のあいだ、あるいは一劫の余りのあいだ、この世に留まることができるであろう』と。」
「アーナンダよ、そなたはそれを信じるか。」
「はい、世尊よ、さようでございます。」
「それゆえに、アーナンダよ、この過失はそなた自身にある。この誤りはそなた自身にある。如来がかくも明らかな示相（じそう）を示し、かくも明らかな徴（しるし）を現したにもかかわらず、そなたはそれを看破することができなかった。そなたは如来に請い願わなかったのである。アーナンダよ、もしそなたが如来に請い願ったならば、如来はそなたの言葉を二度までは退けたかもしれぬが——」
