“Ānanda, there are these eight causes and reasons for a great earthquake. What eight? This great earth is established on water, the water is established on air, and the air stands in space. At a time when a great wind blows, it stirs the water, and the water stirs the earth. This is the first cause and reason for a great earthquake. 「アーナンダよ、大地震の生起には、八つの因（ヘトゥ）と八つの縁（パッチャヤ）がある。その八つとは何か。
アーナンダよ、この大地（マハーパタヴィー）は水の上に安立し、水は風の上に安立し、風は虚空（アーカーサ）のなかに住する。アーナンダよ、やがてある時節に、大風が吹き起こる。大風が吹き起これば、水を動揺せしめる。水が動揺すれば、大地を震動せしめる。これが大地震の生起する第一の因、第一の縁である。
さらにまた、アーナンダよ、神通（イッディ）を具え、心の自在（チェートワシッパッタ）を得た沙門（サマナ）もしくは婆羅門（ブラーフマナ）があり、あるいは大いなる神通力と威力とを具えた天神（デーワ）がある。かれらは、大地の想（パタウィーサンニャー）を限定的に修習し……」
