“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, mahā vatāyaṁ bhūmicālo; sumahā vatāyaṁ bhūmicālo bhiṁsanako salomahaṁso; devadundubhiyo ca phaliṁsu. Ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāyā”ti? Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi, ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante. 「ああ、なんと不思議なことよ、なんと希有なることよ。まことに大きな地震であった。まことに大きな、この上もなく大きな地震であった。恐ろしく、身の毛もよだつほどの揺れであり、天の太鼓（デーヴァドゥンドゥビー）もまた裂け響いた。いかなる因（ヘートゥ）、いかなる縁（パッチャヤ）によって、この大地震は現れたのであろうか」と。そのとき、尊者アーナンダは世尊のおられるところへと近づき、近づいてから世尊を礼拝し、一方の脇に座した。一方の脇に座した尊者アーナンダは、世尊に次のように申し上げた。「尊き師よ、なんと不思議なることでございましょう。尊き師よ、なんと希有なることでございましょう。尊き師よ、まことに大きな地震でございました。尊き師よ、まことに大きな、この上もなく大きな地震でございました。恐ろしく、身の毛もよだつほどの揺れであり、天の太鼓もまた裂け響きました。」
