15. Surrendering the Life Force So at the Cāpāla Shrine the Buddha, mindful and aware, surrendered the life force. When he did so there was a great earthquake, awe-inspiring and hair-raising, and thunder cracked the sky. Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: “Comparing the incomparable <j>with the creation of prolonged life, the sage surrendered the life force. Happy inside, serene, he shattered self-creation like a suit of armor.” 16. T
かくして世尊は、チャーパーラ廟において、正念正知のうちに、寿行（āyusaṅkhāra）を放棄された。世尊が寿行を放棄されたとき、大地は激しく震動し、人の心を慄然とさせ、身の毛もよだつほどであった。そして天の太鼓が轟き割れた。
そこで世尊は、この事の意義を知られて、その時にこの感興の言葉（udāna）を発せられた。
「比べうるものと比べえぬものとを——
長く続く生の形成（bhavasaṅkhāra）を、
牟尼（muni）は放棄した。
内に喜び、静かに三昧に入りて、
みずから作れる鎧を打ち砕いたように、
おのれの生存の殻を打ち破った」
そのとき、尊者アーナンダにこのような思いが起こった。
