10. The Mirror of the Teaching It’s no wonder that a human being should pass away. But if you should come and ask me about it each and every time someone passes away, that would be a bother for me. So Ānanda, I will teach you the explanation of the Dhamma named ‘the mirror of the teaching’. A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves: ‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. 人間として生を受けた者が命を終えることは、何ら不思議なことではない。しかし、アーナンダよ、誰かが亡くなるたびに汝がわたしのもとへ来てそのことを問うならば、それはわたしにとって煩わしいことになるであろう。
それゆえ、アーナンダよ、わたしはここに「教えの鏡（ダンマーダーサ）」と名づける法門（ダンマパリヤーヤ）を説くことにしよう。この法門を具え備えた聖なる弟子（アリヤサーヴァカ）は、自ら望むならば、自らについて次のように宣言することができる。
「わたしは地獄（ニラヤ）の生を滅し尽くした。畜生（ティラッチャーナ）の生を滅し尽くした。餓鬼（ペッタ）の境界を滅し尽くした。すべての悪処（アパーヤ）・悪趣（ドゥッガティ）・堕処（ヴィニパータ）を滅し尽くした。わたしは預流（ソーターパンナ）であり、堕悪趣の法なく、正しく定まって、菩提（サンボーディ）を究極の目的としている」と。
