その意義を了知されて、世尊はその時、次の感興の言葉（ウダーナ）を発せられた。
「洪水や流れを渡る者は、橋を架けて沼沢を捨て去る。
人々がまだ筏を結んでいる間に、
智慧ある人（メーダーヴィー）はすでに渡り終えている。」

その時、尊者アーナンダは世尊の後ろに立って、世尊に団扇を差し上げていた。
〔アーナンダは申し上げた。〕「尊師よ、わたくしはこのように聞いております。『ヴァッジー族の人々は、制定されていないものを新たに制定せず、すでに制定されたものを廃棄せず、昔からのヴァッジーの法（ダンマ）のとおりに、定められた規則を守って行じている』と。」
〔世尊は言われた。〕「アーナンダよ、ヴァッジー族の人々が、制定されていないものを新たに制定せず……」
