「では、サーリプッタよ、過去の世に存在されたすべての阿羅漢（あらかん）・正等覚者（しょうとうかくしゃ）たる世尊がたについては、どうであるか。汝はかの世尊がたの心を己が心をもって遍知し、『かの世尊がたはかくのごとき戒（かいしゃ）を具えておられた、かくのごとき法（のり）を、かくのごとき智慧（ちえ）を、かくのごとき住処（じゅうしょ）を、かくのごとき解脱（げだつ）を具えておられた』と了知したのであるか」と。
「いいえ、尊者よ、さようではございません」と。
「尊者よ、わたくしは、過去・未来・現在の阿羅漢・正等覚者たる諸仏の御心を他心智（たしんち）によって遍知する力を持っているわけではございません。しかしながら、わたくしは法（のり）からの推論（法門の類推）によってこれを了解しているのでございます。
たとえば、尊者よ、王の辺境に一つの城市（じょうし）があり、それは堅固な堀（ほり）と堅固な城壁と門楼とを備え、ただ一つの門を有しているとします。そこには聡明な門番がいて……」
