「識（ヴィンニャーナ）を縁として名色（ナーマルーパ）が生ずる」と、このように説いたのであります。アーナンダよ、識を縁として名色が生ずるということを、次のような道理によっても理解すべきであります。
もし識が母の胎内に宿らなかったならば、名色はその胎内において凝集することがあるでしょうか。」
「いいえ、世尊よ、そのようなことはございません。」
「もし識が母の胎内に宿ったのち、やがてそこより離れ去るならば、名色はこの状態に生まれ出ることがあるでしょうか。」
「いいえ、世尊よ、そのようなことはございません。」
「もし幼い男の子あるいは女の子の識が断たれてしまうならば、名色は成長・増大・成熟に達することがあるでしょうか。」
「いいえ、
