‘That Khaṇḍa, the king’s son, and Tissa, the high priest’s son, are astute, competent, clever, and have long had little dust in their eyes. Why don’t I teach them first of all? 「王子カンダと司祭の子ティッサは、バンドゥマティーの王都に住んでいる。彼らは賢明にして有能、才知に富み、長い間、眼の塵（煩悩）が少なき者として生まれついている。まず彼らに法（ダンマ）を説くとしよう。彼らはきっとこの教えをすみやかに了解するであろう」と。
さて、比丘たちよ、かの世尊にして阿羅漢（アラハン）なる正等覚者（サンマーサンブッダ）ヴィパッシーは、ちょうど力ある者が曲げた腕を伸ばし、あるいは伸ばした腕を曲げるがごとく、それほどの瞬きの間に、菩提樹（ボーディルッカ）の根元から姿を消し、バンドゥマティーの王都の近く、「聖域」と名づけられる鹿野苑（ロカヒタ）に出現された。そして、世尊ヴィパッシーは園守に向かって呼びかけられた。「園守よ、どうか……」
