「善き友よ、我らはあなたのもとで梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修め、諸々の欲望に対する欲貪（よくとん）を離れて、ここに生まれ来たのです」と。「善き友よ、まさにこの賢劫（けんごう）において、世尊はいま阿羅漢（あらかん）・正等覚者（しょうとうかくしゃ）として世に出現されました。世尊は、善き友よ、刹帝利（せっていり）の種族に生まれ、刹帝利の家系に出られました。世尊の御姓（みかばね）は、善き友よ、ゴータマであります。世尊の寿命は、善き友よ、短く、僅かにして、軽く、速やかに過ぎゆくものであります。長く生きるとしても、それは百年、あるいはいくらかそれを超えるに過ぎません。世尊は、善き友よ、アッサッタ（阿説他・菩提樹）の根のもとにおいて正覚（しょうがく）を成就されました。世尊には、善き友よ、サーリプッタとモッガッラーナという名の、最勝の二大声聞（しょうもん）の弟子の双璧がおられました——
