Back at the royal compound, the prince brooded, miserable and sad: ‘Curse this thing called rebirth, since old age and sickness will come to anyone who’s born.’ He addressed his charioteer, ‘My dear charioteer, what has that man done? For his eyes and his voice are unlike those of other men.’ ‘That, Your Majesty, is called a sick man.’ ‘But why is he called a sick man?’ ‘He’s called a sick man; hopefully he will recover from that illness.’ ‘But my dear charioteer, am I liable to fall sick? 王宮の奥殿に戻られたヴィパッシン太子は、苦しみ（dukkha・苦）に沈み、悲しみに打ちひしがれながら思い悩まれた。「まことに忌まわしきかな、生（jāti・生）というものは。生まれた者には老い（jarā・老）が訪れ、病（byādhi・病）もまた現れ来るとは」と。
やがて太子は御者の姿を認め、こう問いかけられた。「御者よ、あの者はどうした者か。目の色も、声の様子も、他の者たちとは異なっているようだが」
「あれは、大王よ、病める者（byādhita）と申します」
「しかして御者よ、病める者とはいかなるものか」
「病める者とは、大王よ、その苦しみの病から、願わくば回復せんとしている者のことにございます」
「されば御者よ、わたしもまた病に罹ること免れぬのか。わたしもまた——」
