‘When craving doesn’t exist there’s no grasping. When craving ceases, grasping ceases.’ Then Vipassī thought, ‘When what doesn’t exist is there no craving? When what ceases does craving cease?’ Then, through rational application of mind, Vipassī penetrated with wisdom, ‘When what doesn’t exist is there no old age and death? 「渇愛（タンハー）の存しないとき、取（ウパーダーナ）は生じない。渇愛の滅によって、取の滅があるのだ」と。
比丘たちよ、そのとき毘婆尸（ヴィパッシー）菩薩にこのような思いが起こった。「いかなるものの存しないとき、渇愛は生じないのであろうか。いかなるものの滅によって、渇愛の滅があるのであろうか」と。
比丘たちよ、そのとき毘婆尸菩薩は、如理作意（ヨーニソー・マナシカーラ）によって、智慧をもってこのことを現観した。「いかなるものの存しないとき、老死（ジャラーマラナ）は生じないのであろうか。いかなるものの滅によって、老死の滅があるのであろうか」と。
「受（ヴェーダナー）の存しないとき、渇愛は生じない。受の滅によって、渇愛の滅があるのだ」と。
比丘たちよ、そのとき毘婆尸菩薩にこのような思いが起こった。「いかなるものの存しないとき……」
