そのとき、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー菩薩（Vipassī bodhisatta）にこのような思いが起こった。「いったい何が存在するとき、名色（nāmarūpa）は生じるのか。何を縁として、名色は起こるのか」と。
比丘たちよ、そのときヴィパッシー菩薩は、如理作意（yoniso manasikāra）によって、智慧をもって現観（abhisamaya）した。「識（viññāṇa）が存在するとき、名色は生じる。識を縁として、名色は起こる」と。
そのとき、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー菩薩にさらにこのような思いが起こった。「いったい何が存在するとき、識は生じるのか。何を縁として、識は起こるのか」と。
比丘たちよ、そのときヴィパッシー菩薩は、如理作意によって、智慧をもって現観した。「名色（nāmarūpa）が存在するとき——
