Then, through rational application of mind, Vipassī penetrated with wisdom, ‘When craving exists there’s grasping. Craving is a requirement for grasping.’ ‘Alas, this world has fallen into trouble. It’s born, grows old, dies, passes away, and is reborn, yet it doesn’t understand how to escape from this suffering, from old age and death. Then Vipassī thought, ‘When what exists is there craving? そのとき、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー菩薩は、如理作意（にょりさくい）によって、智慧をもって如実に了知した。
「渇愛（たんな）のあるところに、取（しゅ）が生ずる。渇愛を縁として、取があるのだ」と。
「ああ、この世は苦難に陥っている。生まれ、老い、死に、没して、また生を受ける。しかもその者は、この苦しみから、老死（ろうし）からの出離（しゅつり）を知らないのだ」と。
そのとき、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー菩薩にこのような思いが起こった。
「いったい何があるときに渇愛は生ずるのか。何を縁として渇愛はあるのか」と。
そのとき、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー菩薩は、如理作意によって、智慧をもって如実に了知した——
