8. The Renunciate Then King Bandhumā thought, ‘Prince Vipassī must not renounce the throne. He must not go forth from the lay life to homelessness. And the words of the brahmin soothsayers must not come true.’ To this end he provided the prince with even more of the five kinds of sensual stimulation, with which the prince amused himself. そのとき、比丘たちよ、バンドゥマー王はこのように思った。「ヴィパッシー王子が王位を捨てることなく、またヴィパッシー王子が在家の生活を離れて出家（パッバジタ）することなく、そしてバラモンの占者たちの言葉が真実とならぬようにせねばならぬ」と。
そこで、比丘たちよ、バンドゥマー王はヴィパッシー王子のためにいっそう豊かに五種の欲楽（パンチャ・カーマグナ）を整え供した。王子はかくして五種の欲楽をことごとく具えてこれを享受された。
そして、比丘たちよ、ヴィパッシー王子は幾千もの長い歳月を経たのち、ふたたび御者に命じて園苑へと赴かれた。その道すがら、王子はひとりの人物を目にされた——剃髪し、袈裟をまとい、遊行する出家者（パッバジタ）の姿であった。
