Then while King Bandhumā was sitting in court, he’d sit Prince Vipassī in his lap and explain the case to him. And sitting there in his father’s lap, Vipassī would thoroughly consider the case and draw a conclusion using a logical system. So this was all the more reason for him to be known as ‘Vipassī’. そのころ、バンドゥマー王は裁判の座に着くにあたり、ヴィパッシー王子を膝の上に座らせて、訴訟の内容を説き聞かせるのが常であった。かくして、父王の膝に座りながら、ヴィパッシー王子は訴訟の一つひとつを熟慮のうえ検討し、道理（ñāya）に従って裁決を下した。比丘たちよ、王子がかくも道理に従って訴訟を深く審究し裁決を下すがゆえに、いよいよもって「ヴィパッシー（Vipassī・遍観者）」という名声が広まったのである。
そののち、バンドゥマー王はヴィパッシー王子のために三つの楼閣（パーサーダ）を建てさせた――一つは冬のための館、一つは夏のための館、一つは雨季のための館である。そして王子のために五種の感覚的欲楽（pañca kāmaguṇā）を十分に整え備えた。
