しかるに、これら比丘たちのあいだの語らいは、未だ終わらぬままであった。そのとき、世尊は夕暮れ時に独居（禅定）より出でて、カレーリー樹のほとりなる講堂に赴き、設けられた座に就かれた。座につかれた世尊は、比丘たちに告げて言われた。
「比丘たちよ、いま汝らは何を語り合っておったのか。いかなる話が中途にして残されておるのか」と。
そこで比丘たちは、世尊に事の次第を申し上げ、さらにこう付け加えた。
「世尊がお越しになったとき、まさにこの話が未だ終わらずに残っておりました」と。
