「ヴァーセッタよ、まさにそのように、平静（ウペッカー）によって心が解脱（チェートーヴィムッティ）し、よく修め、よく培われたとき、かつて積まれた有限の業（カンマ）は、そこに残ることなく、そこに留まることもない。ヴァーセッタよ、これもまた、梵天（ブラフマー）と共に住む境地へと至る道である。」

一、道と非道についての論議
さて、ヴァーセッタとバーラドヴァージャの両青年は、世尊のもとへと赴いた。近づいてより、世尊と親しく言葉を交わし、喜ばしく記憶すべき挨拶の言葉を述べ終えて、一方の座に着いた。一方の座に着いたヴァーセッタの青年は、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「ゴータマ尊者よ、この事柄につきまして、我々の間には論争があり、異論があり、さまざまな異なる見解がございます——」
