‘We call upon Indra! We call upon Soma! We call upon Varuṇa! We call upon Īsāna! We call upon the Progenitor! We call upon the Divinity! We call upon Mahiddhi! 「われらはインドラを呼ぶ、ソーマを呼ぶ、ヴァルナを呼ぶ、イーサーナを呼ぶ、プラジャーパティを呼ぶ、ブラフマンを呼ぶ、マヒッディを呼ぶ、ヤマを呼ぶ」と。
されどヴァーセッタよ、かの三ヴェーダに通じたバラモンたちは、バラモンたるにふさわしい法（ダンマ）を捨て去り、バラモンたるにふさわしからざる法を奉じながら、ただ呼び求めるがゆえに、ただ祈願するがゆえに、ただ願い望むがゆえに、ただ喜び讃えるがゆえに、身の壊れるとき、死後において、ブラフマン（梵天）と倶に生まれることがあるであろう――そのようなことは、断じてあり得ないのである。
たとえばヴァーセッタよ、このアチラヴァティー河が水をなみなみと満たし、カラスもその水を飲めるほどに岸まで溢れているとしよう。そこへ一人の人がやって来て、彼方の岸へ渡ろうと望む。しかるにその人はなお此岸に立ちながら……
