「友よ、いったいどこにおいて、これら四つの大元素（mahābhūta）——すなわち地界（pathavīdhātu）・水界（āpodhātu）・火界（tejodhātu）・風界（vāyodhātu）——は、残りなく滅し尽くすのであろうか」と。
ケーヴァッタよ、かの大梵天（mahābrahmā）は、二度目もまたその比丘にこう言った。「比丘よ、我こそは梵天（brahmā）、大梵天、征服者、無敵者、一切を見通す者、支配を行ずる者、自在なる主宰者、造作者、創造者、最勝者、生み出す者、統御者、生まれし者と生まれんとする者すべての父である」と。
ケーヴァッタよ、かの比丘は三度目もまた大梵天にこう言った。
——されば比丘よ、この過ち（dukkaṭa）はひとえにそなた自身のものであり、この罪咎（aparaddha）もひとえにそなたに帰するのである。そなたは世尊（bhagavant）を飛び越えて……
