A householder hears that teaching, or a householder’s child, or someone reborn in a good family. They gain faith in the Realized One and reflect: ‘Life at home is cramped and dirty, life gone forth is wide open. It’s not easy for someone living at home to lead the spiritual life utterly full and pure, like a polished shell. Why don’t I shave off my hair and beard, dress in ocher robes, and go forth from the lay life to homelessness?’ After some time they give up a large or small fortune, and a l
ある在家の者（gahapati・居士）、あるいはその子息、あるいは良家に生まれた者が、その教えを聞く。彼はその教えを聞いて、如来（tathāgata）に対する信（saddhā）を得る。その信を得て、彼はこのように深く思惟する。
「在家の生活は狭苦しく、塵にまみれている。出家（pabbajjā）の道は、大空のごとく広々としている。在家にとどまりながら、磨き上げられた貝のごとく、ことごとく円満にして清浄なる梵行（brahmacariya）を修めることは、容易なことではない。それならば、髪と鬚を剃り落とし、袈裟衣（kāsāya）をまとい、家を捨てて出家の道に入ろうではないか」と。
かくして彼はやがて、多くあるいは少なき財産の集積を捨て、また多くあるいは少なき……
