「同じように、三つの生存のうちのいずれかにある間は、他の二つの名で呼ばれることなく、ただそれ自身の名においてのみ呼ばれるのです。これらは世間における共通の慣用（ローカサマンニャー）、世間の言語表現（ローカニルッティ）、世間の言葉づかい（ローカヴォハーラ）、世間の概念設定（ローカパンニャッティ）であって、如来（タターガタ）はそれらを用いて語りはするものの、それらに囚われることはないのです。」
こう説かれると、遍歴行者（パリッバージャカ）のポッタパーダは世尊にこう申し上げた。
「素晴らしゅうございます、尊師よ、誠に素晴らしゅうございます。たとえば、倒れたものを起こし、覆われたものを開き、迷える者に道を示し、『眼ある者は色（かたち）を見るであろう』と暗闇の中に燈火をかかげるようなものです。まさにそのように、世尊はさまざまな角度から法（ダンマ）を明らかにしてくださいました。」
