‘My friend, that stilt longhouse that you’re building a ladder for—do you know whether it’s to the north, south, east, or west? Or whether it’s tall or short or medium?’ He’d say, ‘This is that stilt longhouse for which I’m building a ladder, right underneath it.’ What do you think, Poṭṭhapāda? 「友よ、あなたが登るための梯子を作っているその高床の家について、それが東にあるのか、南にあるのか、西にあるのか、北にあるのか、あるいは高いのか低いのか中ほどの高さなのかを、あなたは知っているのか」と。そのとき彼はこのように答えるであろう——「友よ、まさにこれがその高床の家です。私がそこへ登るための梯子を作っているその家の、ちょうど真下にいるのです」と。
ポッタパーダよ、これをどう思うか。そのような場合、その人の言葉は証拠に基づくもの（有証拠の言説）となるのではないか」と。
「まったくそのとおりであります、世尊。そのような場合、その人の言葉は確かに証拠に基づくもの（有証拠の言説）となりましょう」と。
