そこで世尊は、遊行者ポッタパーダが滞在する、一本のサーラ樹を有するマッリカーの園林へと赴かれた。
「世尊よ、まず想（サンニャー）が生じ、その後に智（ニャーナ）が生じるのでしょうか。それとも、まず智が生じ、その後に想が生じるのでしょうか。あるいは、想と智とは前後なく同時に生じるのでしょうか。」
「ポッタパーダよ、まず想が生じ、その後に智が生じるのである。そして想の生起によって、智の生起がもたらされる。かくして人は、『まことに、この縁によって我に智が生じたり』と、かく了知するのである。ポッタパーダよ、まず想が生じ、その後に智が生じること、そして想の生起が智の生起をもたらすこと——これがそのように理解されるべき道理（パリヤーヤ）である。」
