彼は了知した。「生（じょう）は尽きた。梵行（ぼんぎょう）は完成された。なすべきことはなされた。もはやこの世に再び生まれることはない」と。かくして尊者カッサパは阿羅漢（あらかん）の一人となったのである。
「カッサパよ、『沙門ゴータマはあらゆる苦行を非難し、荒々しい生活をおくるあらゆる苦行者をひとしなみに責め、そしりたてる』と、かく語る者たちは、わたしの語ったことを正しく伝えてはいない。彼らは虚偽によって、事実なき言葉によって、わたしを誹謗しているのである。カッサパよ、ここにわたしは、清浄にして人知を超えた天眼（てんげん）をもって、苦行に励み粗食粗衣の生活をおくるある者が、身の壊れた後、死後において、衰損（すいそん）の境地、悪趣（あくしゅ）、堕処（だしょ）、地獄（じごく）に生まれ出でるのを見る。しかしまたわたしは、他の者が――」
