Nevertheless, I do not say: ‘The soul and the body are one and the same’ or ‘The soul is one thing, the body another’. … That’s how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics. … They enter and remain in the first absorption … When a mendicant knows and sees like this, would it be appropriate to say of them: ‘The soul and the body are one and the same’ or ‘The soul is one thing, the body another’?” “It would, reverend.” “But reverends, I know and see like this. しかしながら、私はこのようには説かない——「霊魂（ジーヴァ）と身体（サリーラ）は同一である」とも、「霊魂は一つのものであり、身体はまた別のものである」とも……。
このようにして、友よ、比丘は戒（シーラ）を具足した者となる。……
〔そして〕初禅（パタマ・ジャーナ）に入定して住する。
友よ、このように知り、このように見る比丘に対して、「霊魂と身体は同一である」あるいは「霊魂は一つのものであり、身体はまた別のものである」と語ることは、果たして適切であろうか。」
「友よ、このように知り、このように見る比丘に対しては、そのように語ることもまた適切でありましょう。」
「しかし、友よ、私もまたこのように知り、このように見ている。
