それはなぜか。マーリよ、比丘がそのように三昧（さんまい）を修めるならば、まさにそのようになるのである。
さらにまた、マーリよ、比丘が南方において、一面的に三昧を修めた場合も同様であり……西方においても……北方においても……また上方・下方・横方においても、一面的に修めた三昧とは、天上の諸々の色形（しきぎょう）を見るためのものであって、愛しく、欲と結びつき、心を惹きつけるものではあるが、天上の諸々の声（こえ）を聞くためのものではない。
マーリよ、比丘が東方において一面的に三昧を修めた場合はいかなるものか。すなわち、天上の諸々の声を聞くことはできるが、天上の諸々の色形を見ることはできない。かくのごとく三昧（samādhi）を修め発展させたならば……
