Furthermore, a mendicant—with the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion—is a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering. さらにまた、マーリよ、比丘は三つの結（さんゆい）を滅尽し、貪・瞋・癡（とん・じん・ち）が薄らぐことによって、一来者（いちらいしゃ、sakadāgāmī）となる。この世に一度だけ帰り来たりて、苦の終わりをもたらすのである。マーリよ、これもまた、より優れ、より勝妙なる法（ダンマ）であり、比丘たちが私のもとで梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修める目的は、まさにこれを自ら証するためにほかならない。
さらにまた、マーリよ、比丘は五つの下分結（かぶんけつ、orambhāgiyāna-saṁyojana）を滅尽することによって、化生者（けしょうじゃ、opapātika）となる。かの世にて完全に涅槃（ねはん）に入り、その世界から再び戻ることなき者となるのである。マーリよ、これもまた、より優れ、より勝妙なる法であり、比丘たちが私のもとで梵行を修める目的は、まさにこれを自ら証するためにほかならない。
