あなたは戒（かい）を守り、長年にわたって戒を積み重ね、成熟した戒徳を身に備えておられます。……あなたは言葉が美しく、明瞭に発音し、洗練されて淀みなく、意味をよく伝える声をお持ちです。……あなたは多くの師の師であられ、三百人の若い学生たちにヴェーダの讃歌を誦じさせておられます。また、さまざまな地方や国々から、讃歌を学ばんがために、あなたのもとへ多くの学生たちが訪れてまいります。……あなたはすでに老い、年老いて長老となり、齢を重ね、人生の最後の段階に達しておられます。ところが沙門ゴータマは若く、また出家されてからもなお日は浅いのです。
