Now at that time several hundred brahmins were residing in Khāṇumata thinking to participate in Kūṭadanta’s sacrifice. They heard that Kūṭadanta was going to see the ascetic Gotama. その頃、カーヌマタには数百人のバラモンたちが住んでおり、「クータダンタ・バラモンの大祭祀（マハーヤンニャ）に与かろう」と思っていた。彼らはやがて耳にした——「クータダンタ・バラモンが、沙門ゴータマのもとへ会いに行くらしい」と。そこでバラモンたちはクータダンタのもとへおもむき、こう申し上げた。
「クータダンタ様、沙門ゴータマのもとへ会いに行かれるとは、まことのことでございましょうか」
「諸賢よ、たしかにそのように思っているのです」
「どうか、クータダンタ様、沙門ゴータマのもとへは行かれませぬよう。様はヴェーダの讃歌を誦し、よく記憶せられ、三ヴェーダを、その語彙・祭儀・音韻・語義分類にいたるまで、ことごとく修得せられた方ではございませぬか。
