Then he summoned the brahmin high priest and said to him: ‘Just now, brahmin, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind, “I have achieved human wealth, and reign after conquering this vast territory. Why don’t I perform a great sacrifice? That will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.” Brahmin, I wish to perform a great sacrifice. Please instruct me. そのとき王はバラモンの祭官を召し出してこう告げた。「バラモンよ、つい先ほど、私が独り静かに閑居（かんきょ）して思惟（しゆい）にふけっていたとき、このような心の思いが起こった。『私はすでに豊かな人間の財（ほう）を得て、この広大な大地の圏域を征服し、そこに君臨している。どうか私は大いなる祭祀（まつり）を行うことにしよう。それは長きにわたって私の利益と安楽（やすらぎ）のためとなるであろう』と。バラモンよ、私は大祭（だいさい）を修したいと思う。どうか、長きにわたって私の利益と安楽のためとなるよう、師よ、私に教え示してほしい」と。
このように王が語り終えると、バラモンの祭官は王マハーヴィジタ（Mahāvijita・大征服王）に向かってこう申し上げた。「王よ、どうか保証を与えたまえ――」
