He went forth from the lay life to homelessness while still a youth, young, with pristine black hair, blessed with youth, in the prime of life. … 4. Soṇadaṇḍa Has Second Thoughts Then Soṇadaṇḍa together with a large group of brahmins went to see the Buddha. But as he reached the far side of the forest, this thought came to mind, He might say to me: ‘Brahmin, you shouldn’t answer the question like that. This is how you should answer it.’ And the assembly might disparage me for that: ‘Soṇadaṇḍa is
彼はまだ若く、漆黒の髪を持ち、青春の盛りにありながら、在家の生活を捨てて出家（パッバジタ）し、遊行者（サマナ）の道を歩んだのであった。……
さて、ソーナダンダ婆羅門（ブラーフマナ）は、多くの婆羅門の群れとともに、ガッガラー蓮池のほとりへと向かった。しかるに、森の向こう側にさしかかったとき、ソーナダンダ婆羅門の心に、ふとこのような思いが兆した。
「もし沙門（サマナ）ゴータマが、わたしに向かって、『婆羅門よ、その問いはそのように答えるべきものではない。婆羅門よ、この問いはかくのごとく答えるべきである』と言われるならば、その場に居合わせた人々はわたしを嘲るであろう。『ソーナダンダは——』と。」
