「沙門ゴータマこそが、ソーナダンダ師のもとへ赴くのが相応しいのです。なぜなら、師ソーナダンダは父方・母方の両方において生まれが清らかであり、七代にわたる祖先の系譜（ピターマハ・ユガ）まで血統に一点の曇りもなく、生まれをめぐる論難において何ら責められるいわれのない方だからです。まさにそれゆえに――父方・母方の両方において清らかな生まれを持ち、七代の祖先にいたるまで純粋な家柄（ガハニカ）を誇り、生まれの議論において非の打ちどころのない師ソーナダンダが――沙門ゴータマのもとへ赴くことは相応しくなく、沙門ゴータマこそが師ソーナダンダのもとへ足を運ぶべきなのです」
こうして人々が語り合っていたとき、ソーナダンダはその婆羅門（バラモン）たちに向かって、おもむろに言葉を発した。
「母と父がどれほど望もうとも、また涙を流して引き留めようとも――」
